About the Artists:
Margaret Jenkins
Margaret Jenkins is a choreographer, teacher, and mentor to many young artists as well as a designer of unique community-based dance projects. She has made more than 75 works for her Company, and has created commissioned works for numerous dance companies and presenting organizations. In November 2005, Jenkins and five members of her Company were invited to Kochi, India to participate in a four-week rehearsal and performance residency to develop source material for the evening-length piece, A Slipping Glimpse (performed at the Clarice Smith Center in October 2007). In 2008, Jenkins and her company traveled to Guangzhou, China for a five-week rehearsal and performance residency with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company to further develop the Other Suns trilogy, which was inspired by a 2004 residency in China.
Liu Qi
Choreographer Liu Qi is well-known for the physical fluidity and movement sensitivity in her choreography. Her previous award-winning works were usually structured on her observation and commentary on real life situations. Since joining Guangdong Modern Dance Company in 1996, she has served the company as dancer, teacher and artistic master and, in 2004, was appointed deputy artistic director. Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC) is mainland China's first professional modern dance company. Its vision that modern dance is a tool for self-expression attracts some of the most talented dancers and choreographers in China, paving the way for the development of dance in a country with distinctly different social and cultural backgrounds from the West.
Paul Dresher
Paul Dresher exemplifies the spirit of West Coast music both in the richness of his sound world as well as the inventiveness of his mind. In the tradition of Harry Partch, Conlon Nancarrow, Lou Harrison, and Bill Colvig, Paul has invented new instruments, both mechanical and electronic, each of which has expanded his musical thinking. To that he adds a background in North Indian and Balinese traditions, all of which results in music of exceptional individuality and beauty. A polymath who makes music in an astounding variety of ways, he composes and performs experimental opera and music theater, chamber and orchestral music, and instrumental electro-acoustic music. He also creates and performs on newly invented musical instruments and collaborates each season with artists in theater, dance, and film.
