UM Department of Dance: Maryland Dance Ensemble (Fall 2009)

The Maryland Dance Ensemble fall concert will feature the repertory ensemble in works by faculty and visiting artists. The evening will begin with a prelude performance of Sharon Mansur’s “semblance” in the Grand Pavilion at 7:30 PM. Mansur's piece is infused with personal and collective images, writings and other musings on the nature of feminine identity, inspired in part by the imagery of contemporary photographer Francesca Woodman.

The 8PM concert program includes “Whispers from the Garden,” a new work by Alvin Mayes; “Try, Try Again,” choreographed and performed by Dawn Springer to music by Franz Schubert and Joan Baez after Bob Dylan; and “Intervals,” an exploration of the relationship between sound and movement and between dancer and musician, created and performed by choreographer Nathan Andary and composer Jane Wang. A five-minute piece, “1 Thing,” choreographed by Gesel Mason to music by Amerie, closes out the first half of the program.

The second half of the program opens with “Duet,” a brief piece by Dawn Springer, followed by excerpts from Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig’s “Unmoored (Love Letters to New Orleans).” “Unmoored” is a full-evening dance/theatre/video “live documentary” that addresses the unfathomable loss and love in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. PearsonWidrig Dance Theater has been creating and touring the work since 2006; all text and video are continually evolving as the work tours from city to city.
