Student Employment – Production

Audio Services Apprentice

Supervisor: James O’Connell – Assistant Manager of Audio
Availability: Daily and when-available calls. Hours based upon event schedules.

Description:

You will be trained to operate the mixing consoles and processors, design and install the audio system and maintain and repair audio equipment.

You will work as part of a team that provides audio support for Center productions.

You may also assist in the installation, maintenance, and operation of video, communication and intercom systems throughout the building.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Have an interest in audio systems and sound reinforcement.
  • Previous experience with live sound systems. Preferred
  • Ability to work more than 8 feet above the ground. Preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Preferred
  • Customer service skills. Preferred

Costume Shop Stitcher

Supervisor: Sue Chaing – Costume Coordinator
Availability: 6–20 hours per week, with a minimum shift length of two hours.
Costume Shop is open at these times:
  • Monday: 1:00PM–6:00PM
  • Tuesday: 1:00PM–5:00PM
  • Wednesday: 1:00PM–6:00PM
  • Thursday: 1:00PM–6:00PM
  • Friday: 10:00AM–2:00PM

Description:

You will wash, press and roll fabric; sew muslin mock-ups and fabric costumes by hand and machine; assist in costume fittings.

In addition, you will maintain costumes, restock costumes in storage, organize sewing supplies, prepare and maintain costume racks and perform administrative tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Possess demonstrated sewing experience, including completion of THET 114 and THET 479 (costume shop hours) to acceptable standards. If coursework has not been completed at the Clarice Smith Center, a sewing test may be required. You may be asked to provide examples of garments sewn elsewhere.
  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Customer service skills. Preferred

Electric Services Apprentice

Supervisor: Laura MacAdam – Electrics Manager
Availability: Daily and when-available calls.

Description:

After learning proper theatre and lighting safety standards, you will be trained to operate a light-board and follow-spot, to hang lights and to learn circuiting techniques in all venues of the Center.

You will have the opportunity to work with other undergraduate and graduate students as well as professional lighting designers.

Once you demonstrate mastery of skills, you will have the opportunity to become a Student Electrician or a Student Electrics Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Have an interest in theatrical lighting and technology.
  • Ability to work more than 8 feet above the ground. Preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Preferred

Event Services Crew

Supervisor: Mark Lanks – Event Services Manager
Availability: Daily and when-available calls. Hours based upon event schedules.

Description:

You will be part of the team that plans and executes events at the Clarice Smith Center: setting up events, serving as a member of the shift crew and taking events down when they end.

You will work under the supervision of an Event Coordinator or a Stage Manager to ensure the smooth running of events, which range from simple lectures and recitals to complex international showcases of the performing arts.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work more than 8 feet above the ground. Preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Preferred
  • Knowledge of basic stage practices and operations. Preferred

Paint Shop Apprentice

Supervisor: Ann Chismar – Paint Shop Supervisor
Availability: Daily and when-available calls.

Description:

You will be trained in the art of scenic painting, learning to paint and texture scenic drops, set pieces, props and floor as well as learning to techniques for sculpting and modeling.

Once you demonstrate mastery of skills, you will have the opportunity to become a Charge Painter or a Scenic Artist.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Have previous experience in drawing and painting.
  • Have an interest in fine arts and painting.
  • Ability to work more than 8 feet above the ground. Preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Preferred
  • Customer service skills. Preferred

Prop Shop Apprentice

Supervisor: Tim Jones – Prop Shop Manager
Availability: Daily and when-available calls.

Description:

After learning proper construction and shop-work safety standards, you will be trained to safely operate tools and construct properties.

In order to construct props you will learn to work with wood, sew, weld, and read construction drawings.

Once you demonstrate mastery of skills, you will have the opportunity to become a Prop Shop Artisan or Prop Master.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Have an interest in theatrical crafts and props.
  • Ability to work more than 8 feet above the ground. Preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Preferred
  • Customer service skills. Preferred

Scene Shop Assistant

Supervisor: Steve Workman – Scene Shop Coordinator
Availability: Hours are flexible. We prefer that you work at least 8 hours each week in no less than 2-hour blocks.

Description:

After learning proper construction and shop-work safety standards, you will be trained to safely operate tools and construct scenery.

As you work with experienced students and professionals, you will become a scenic carpenter or welder.

Once you demonstrate mastery of skills, you will have the opportunity to become a Scene Shop Carpenter.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Have an interest in theatrical production.
  • Ability to work more than 8 feet above the ground. Preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Preferred
  • Previous tool and construction experience. Preferred

Wardrobe Crew

Supervisor: Sue Chiang – Costume Shop Coordinator
Availability: Position open only during academic year when events are produced. Must be available for the entire tech/performance period for a particular event. Call times are set by the Costume Shop staff or Stage Management.

Description:

You will attend selected rehearsals of performances, load-ins, quick change rehearsals and all dress rehearsals and performances.

You will prepare and maintain costumes including laundering, pressing, tracking, presetting and making repairs, as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to follow technical instructions.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Successful completion of THET 479 as Wardrobe Crew or comparable professional wardrobe experience.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills.
