Volunteering

Become more involved with the success of the Clarice Smith Center! We have opportunities for both students and members of the community to volunteer.

How We Select Volunteers

We accept volunteer applications at all times and review them at the beginning of each semester (September and January).

We select volunteers in the order in which we receive applications, seniority and quality of previous volunteer work at the Clarice Smith Center.

Who Can Be a Volunteer?

We want volunteers who are:
  • friendly, outgoing and enjoy working with people,
  • willing to commit to at least one full season of volunteering,
  • interested in the work of the Clarice Smith Center, and
  • at least 18 years of age or have the signed permission of a parent.

What Do Volunteers Do?

Volunteers work primarily during performances, serving as greeters, ticket-takers, ushers and coat check attendants.

Volunteers arrive one hour before the performance start time.

Volunteers may choose their own performances. Assignments for the entire season are given on a first-come first-served basis in the late summer.

What Are the Benefits of Volunteering at the Clarice Smith Center?

While on duty volunteers are able to watch the performance for free. Seating is typically available but not guaranteed.

Additionally, volunteers may elect to join the Senior Volunteer Service Corps at the University of Maryland. (You do not have to be a senior citizen to join.) The benefits of joining the SVSC include:

  • A University identity card
  • Staff discounts
  • A parking permit
  • An email account
  • Library card
  • Use of UM shuttle buses
  • Invitations to a recognition reception hosted by the University's president, and other events throughout the year
  • Tuition-free courses
(for MD residents age 60 or older under the University's Golden I.D. program)
  • Audit courses at no cost
(Those not eligible for tuition-free courses may receive the staff's assistance in arranging to audit courses. This informal arrangement is at the discretion of the instructor.)
